Key molds are a crafted item which allows you to make a plastic copy of normal colored Keys carried by specific Guards determined by the character naming screen whenever you start a new prison. From left to right, the first guard will have the Cell Key, the 2nd guard will have the Utility Key, followed by the Entrance Key, then the Staff Key and then the 5th guard will have the Work Key. those guards will ALWAYS have those specific keys in order. The other guards will carry NO KEYS, only a guard outfit and baton. Remember the names of the guards or change their names to label them with what key they have to make it easier to find the key you desire (for example, name the 4th guard "REDKEY' or "GUARD4" ect) Key molds can only be made by crafting and are never found in inmate's desks or sold by inmates. Making a key mold prevents you from being sent to solitary when Guards wake up after being knocked out without his key. In order to make a key mold, first make a Wad of Putty by mixing Tub of Talcum Powder and Toothpaste. Then knock out the desired guard, open his inventory, and remove his key. Craft the key together with the wad of putty to make a key mold of the color key. Then open the guards inventory up again and replace the original key. This way when the guard wakes up you will be safe from trouble! Then make Molten Plastic by crafting a lighter either a Toothbrush or a comb (not a Comb Shiv) which can always be found in inmate's desks. Then craft together the key mold and the molten plastic together to make a Plastic Key! This key can be used to open all doors locked with that color, but be aware that using a plastic key reduces its durability by 10%, meaning you can walk through that color door 10 times. After the key is used up, it disappears from your inventory.

Making a key mold requires at least 50 intelligence, so make sure you have enough intelligence to make a key before attacking a guard!

If you need more time to craft a key mold, for example if you don't have a wad of putty with you when a guard is down and you need to go get it, you can keep the officer down longer by using a Length of Rope or Duct Tape to tie him up, which gives you much more time to keep the original key in your inventory to either use on doors or have more time to make a key mold.

Remember that no matter how the guard is knocked out, the next time he sees you after knocking him out, he will always attack you until you either get away or he knocks your skull around and knocks YOU out! Be careful not to be caught off guard by this if you have good items in your inventory and getting surprise attacked! And be careful not to be caught with it! It is contraband and will set scanners off as well as being taken away if you are knocked out with it still in your inventory and sent to the infirmary or if it is still in your desk when the guard comes for a Shakedown!

Also note that you CANNOT use a plastic key to make a new mold. However, if you need to use a key a lot, or want a spare as an emergency backup in case you are doing high-risk activities that risk you losing the key, you can make multiple key molds with the same original key to make multiple key molds. But making many keys requires a lot of molten plastic which means you need a lot of lighters! Especially if you use a Cup of Molten Chocolate to knock out a guard, which is the best way to knock out Inmates and guards. Molten chocolate can be crafted with a lighter, cup and a Bar of Chocolate.

Use combs to make molten plastic as one is found in every desk including your own at the start of a prison! And you cannot use a Comb Shiv or a Toothbrush Shiv to make molten plastic.

A good strategy to deal with a scanner while trying to get a key is to carry the toothpaste, talcum powder, cup, chocolate and lighter together while carrying a Contraband Pouch while looking for the guard who has the key you need. None of these items will set off the scanner while you walk around searching for the guard. Then when you find him, craft the Cup of Molten Chocolate and THEN use it right away and make the Wad of Putty to make they key mold. This way, you can save durability since none of the original items are contraband and you will not set the scanner off walking around searching for the guard. When you have the key mold you will only use the contraband pouch once when you walk back through the scanner to the other side!
